Tong lab alumni updates: Janice Ong from Thomas Jefferson HS in Arlington, VA, who did an internship in Tong Lab in summer 2013, was among the 20 high school students selected competitively nation-wide to participate the 2014 Chemistry Olympiad Study Campus from which 4 will be chosen to represent US for the 2014 (46th) International Chemistry Olympiad in Hanoi - Vietnam from July 20 through 29, 2014. Janice actually also made the USA Biology Olympiad camp again this year, but she chose to go to the Chemistry Olympiad camp. Janice did summer research in 2013 with Melissa on synthesizing PtCo nanoparticles for ethanol electro-oxidation. Way to go, Janice, and good luck in competing for one of the final 4 spots of the US team. This summer, she'll be interning at the NIH, specifically the National Cancer Institute, to gain some experience in molecular biology. For her senior research project at TJ the coming school year, she chose to work in a Chemical Analysis lab, where she is hoping to do a project relating to nanochemistry. In the long run, Janice envisions to study an area that integrates chemistry and biology.
